The area in Mozambique forming part of The Great Limpopo Trans-frontier Park is called the Limpopo National Park and is located west of Gaza Province, south of the Zimbabwe border and near the South Africa border. This park covers 10,000km of the overall massive 35 000 km Great Limpopo Trans-frontier Park. This is about the size of Israel. With more nature reserves in Limpopo and Mozambique set to join, this park could soon cover an enormous 100 000 km.
The formation of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park as one of the largest conservation areas in the world is a great achievement where Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe opened their borders to create a mega-conservation area. This integration brings together some of the best and most established wildlife areas in Southern Africa. A three year wildlife re-establishment project was started in 2002 where animals were being translocated from Kruger National Park in South Africa to Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.
The opening of these borders and the removal of fences between these countries will re-establish historical animal migration routes previously interrupted by country borders. The relocation of some 1000 elephants from the overcrowded Kruger to the Limpopo National Park began in 2001. The park is managed as an integrated unit across the three countries.
You can also experience interesting cultural rituals and customs such as traditional healing, story-telling and fire dancing and marvel at crafts and art created by the local communities. A superb wildlife area in Mozambique, currently known as Coutada 16, will be added and introduced for the first time to the general public.
