What Viagra strengths are available, and how is the dose chosen?
Viagra dose is chosen by response, safety, health, and interactions; the lowest effective strength is usually preferred.
Viagra is commonly prescribed in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg sildenafil strengths, depending on the country and product. The best dose is the lowest one that provides adequate benefit with tolerable effects; 100 mg is not automatically better or safer.
What Viagra strengths are available?
Brand Viagra and approved generic sildenafil for erectile dysfunction commonly use 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablets. Other sildenafil formulations exist for pulmonary hypertension and should not be substituted into an ED schedule.
Always read the active-ingredient strength, not tablet colour or size. Different manufacturers use different appearances.
How is the starting dose chosen?
A clinician considers age, response, adverse effects, kidney and liver function, interacting medicines, and overall health. Some adults begin with a middle strength; others need a lower starting dose because exposure may be higher.
The dose may be adjusted after correctly timed trials. Do not jump to the maximum after one unsuccessful attempt.
Does a higher dose work faster?
Not necessarily. Onset is influenced by food, timing, stimulation, and individual absorption. A higher dose mainly increases drug exposure and the chance of headache, flushing, indigestion, congestion, visual effects, and low blood pressure.
Use the correct-use checklist before interpreting delay as under-dosing.
How often can Viagra be taken?
Follow the prescription and do not exceed the labelled maximum frequency, commonly once in 24 hours for ED use. Kidney or liver disease and interacting medicines may require different instructions.
Do not add tadalafil during the interval. The combination guide explains overlapping PDE5 effects.
When to reduce or review the dose
- Troublesome headache, flushing, dizziness, or visual disturbance.
- Use of alpha-blockers or medicines that increase sildenafil exposure.
- Kidney or liver impairment.
- Older age with multiple medicines or low blood pressure.
- No benefit after several correctly used attempts.
No benefit may require a diagnosis change rather than more sildenafil. Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, sudden vision or hearing loss, or an erection lasting four hours.

Do not infer strength from tablet appearance
Approved generic manufacturers may use different colours, shapes, and imprints. Compare the dispensing label with the sealed blister and leaflet. A blue tablet bought informally may contain an unknown dose, so it should not be used to “test” whether a higher strength works.
Prepare for the dose review
Bring a record of timing, meal, stimulation, response, and adverse effects. Include all medicines and supplements. This lets the prescriber decide whether to lower, increase, switch, or investigate rather than relying on guesswork.
